What's all the buzz about?
When you're sitting outside, enjoying a meal under the sun, you cringe in fear (at least I do) as you hear that buzzing noise in your personal bubble. You freeze, hoping it will leave, but the sound of the buzzer grows closer and closer. You want to swat it so severely, yet refrain to avoid the sting.
Bee-lieve it, God designed bees for a much greater purpose: to pollinate the beautiful flowers and plants, herbs, and veggies we all crave (well, most of us anyway). The UN has designated today as World Bee Day to raise awareness of the fact that bees are dying off in massive numbers. Healthy foods will become limited without these precious pollinators.
As annoying as bees may bee, they have a unique role in our fragile ecosystem. To help our communities thrive alongside the hive, let's discuss the benefits of bee-friending bees.
Going outside benefits both you and the bees. Gardening or as my mom says, "playing in the dirt," can bee a therapeutic activity. Mentally, it clears your neural pathways allowing your brain to refocus on the caring task at hand. So, it's dually beneficial. Planting different flower species in your own backyard provides a balanced bee habitat. If you have too many bees near your living space, find a plant or two that deters them naturally. It's a pain to pull weeds, but those pesticides can be toxic for bees and humans. Leave a bowl of water to hydrate the little busy bees; not too long, or mosquitoes may lay eggs in the water.
How could I forget the best part of Pooh Bear? There's no better sweet than purchasing honey straight from the source, your local farms. While collecting your bees' honey, consider sharing with the farmer the benefits of planting a variety of plants around the perimeter of his/her respective fields.
Happy Planting, and growing together in community teaching health and wellness.
